Yes the MPC Will Dub Techno?
I reorganized my office/studio this weekend. It was getting a little cramped and I’ve got a lot more room. I don’t like everything being up against the wall, but it makes sense as I only have a not very deep converted half garage. That being said, I work from home about half the time so it’s gotta be—It’s gotta have a desk that can be cleared for day job, and I’m realizing having little jam stations all around the house isn’t the most efficient thing in the universe.
So basically I need to put all my stuff in the office while having less stuff. So I put some stuff in case.
The thinking there is, if I don’t open the case in 30 days, I need to store it on Reverb, and then get it back if and when it’s wanted.
The biggest kind of doubling event right now is Grandmother versus Matriarch, but that’s another post entirely.
So what’s come up is, you know those internet videos that are like “will it synthwave?” or “will it ambient?” Interestingly enough, the Akai MPC world is so fixated on hip-hop and boom bap, that it almost feels like a secret that you can actually make other music, and as stated yesterday, I’m really enjoying the arranging features of this machine and digging in, and it’s just fun. I know Ableton so well, and it’s fun to do something else and meanwhile keep up the Ableton muscles.
That being said, I’ve had my kind of dub techno series going on, basically established on YouTube. )Established for me.) No one’s watching, but I’m in a rhythm, and I’ve gotta do two this week because I am out next week.
So the question is: will the MPC Key 37 dub techno?
The answer is yes. Of course it will.
The real question is how will it dub techno?
I’m starting at the beginning. Listening to Basic Channel / Quadrant Dub. Making the most basic track possible because it’s entirely consistent with my workflow right now anyway.
I’m gonna try to get a couple songs out of it. It’ll just be the Key 37 and my Grandmother. I may bring in the TT-303 at some point, but right now I’m just gonna concentrate on this and maybe go wholly in the Akai box because it’s certainly capable, and this is as simple as possible. It’s basically going deep on MIDI and variations.
So let’s see how far we can push it, and can we get a 15 minute jam out of it? Yes, but the most important one is the second or third one, because that means you can really do it and go deep. Which I can. It’s just a matter of my knowledge at this point.
So look for that in the next couple days. I’ll post the YouTube video here.
And for whoever has come here and then looked at my YouTube channel: God bless you. That’s how things are supposed to work. Who knows if it’s actually working?
But I’m working.
