Turns Out Networking Works (vomit)
Vomit alert. Turns out networking really works.
I prefer to call it calling friends and telling them what I’m up to, which is what I’ve been doing.
I’ve been getting the word out that I’m looking for more DJ gigs. I did a headshot that was super popular on my Instagram page, started making consistent posters, and took one of the bookers to task a little bit.
“Hey, aren’t you booking me for this stuff?”
He’s just like, “Okay, we’ll start booking you.”
Which is great. So I’m going to keep bugging them.
I talked to a couple of friends and asked who they knew. They connected me to other friends. Those people connected me to still more friends.
It’s funny when you’re trying to ramp all this stuff up. It’s like equipment. Let’s work with what we have first before we start buying stuff.
I’d say the equivalent is: who are the friends you already know that are working on stuff? Talk to them.
Lo and behold, it really works.
Now I have two DJ gigs this weekend. One’s a four-hour yacht rock thing, which is going to be a lot of fun, and the other is a chill thing on Sunday in the middle of the afternoon, which is perfect for me.
There’s also a great TAXI listing for dub music, so I’m going to work on that and really try to focus on these things.
I’m doing a very light practice routine with bass because I probably don’t have another bass gig until August. So I’ve got July off and the rest of June off, which is too bad. I’m going to desperately try not to get cold.
Lots of fun stuff.
I think I’ve got the DJ rig figured out. It can be battery powered, but I can go power as well.
Life is good in the DJ world.
