Stubbs Gig Review

On Bass and background vocals.

We played the indoor stage from 6:30 to 7:30 — not exactly the prime spot, but there was a decent crowd. Sound was okay, but only for us/ not the sound guy's fault. We did get a check, but it was very subby, so I ran through the monitors and got enough string noise to hear what I was doing. I could not hear the bass amp I was plugged into on stage, which was pretty weird. Had to operate by faith/ the force for background vocals.

One of the problems with having so many people in the band is that not everybody gets a monitor. I was sharing one with the fiddle, but I felt good about what I was singing, and I could hear enough to know I was in there.

It takes about 30 minutes for us to settle into our groove, and for a 50-minute set — we usually do two hours — I do not think we have ever done something that short. Took us a while to get slotted in, but once we did, it sounded good and relatively clam-free. I was properly prepared, so that helped.

The low light threw me off. I had to stare at the bass at points, and in the photos I have seen, I am just looking straight down. All in all, a good performance. Probably a B for me, and a B for the band, too.

It was fun, and I dipped quick. I did not know too many people, took one loop around the inside, did not see anybody, and was home in time to watch some football.
