now

I sent a Music update to a friend. I thought it would be good to post here as a kind of where-am-I-right-now:

All that Dub Electronica stuff was made last January. It was so far outside what I typically do that I didn’t even listen back for a long time. Usually in January I do 31 demos in 31 days — that’s how my first instrumental record happened, and that one’s actually done pretty well. I did another 31 this past January too, but I decided to step away for a month. I’m going to listen in March and pick the tracks then.

That’s actually why I went back and listened to the Dub stuff — and I was pleasantly surprised. Long-term vision for that material is boutiques, hotel lobbies, small spaces. Battery powered. One or two wires to the speakers. Super chill. One small table. Live mixing and playing. That setup would be amazing.

The material from this past month is different — more lo-fi, little guitar-based things. I’ll release that at the end of March. After that, I’ll start releasing monthly more typical songs to clear the backlog — probably 15 or so sitting there.

I do want to get back into more solo stuff, but mixing electronics and acoustic guitar. I’ve got a home stage setup that’s evolving and getting more refined by the day. I’m trying not to overthink it — just go in and play and see what works — but I’m getting close. I’ve got a booking coming up at Lost Creek Country Club — I try to do that quarterly. I'll mix in deep 80s cuts too — Split Enz-level stuff that only five of us in the States probably still listen to.

Recording-wise I bought a compressor and EQ today so I can master at home and keep everything moving without relying on outside studios. I’m basically building an assembly line. I moved Beau's Drums out of my home office so now I’ve got separate spaces — work space, jam space, etc. That’s been helpful.

The overarching idea is: when I’m ready to tell people what I’m doing, there’s a catalog. “Oh wow, there’s a lot here.” Music, writing, a body of work.
