No Business, No Problems (Bring on the Problems)

I’ve got two gigs this weekend.

Keyboardist already dropped out of Friday night, but I’m doing bass and backing tracks, so we’ve got that covered. We’ve had to cover for a non-participating keyboardist before, so we’re kind of all set and in our comfort zone.

Then we’ve got a private party Saturday night with Buckdancer, and we found out yesterday there was no sound. Luckily our reg sound guy was available. The booker had looked at it like we just… a communication issue all around. Tried to get answers earlier. Blah blah blah blah blah.

It leads me to an old piece of advice I got from somebody back in my pizza days. A guy helping us run the company one day just looked at me and said, “No business, no problems.”

That’s really some of the best advice—or maybe it was just an observation—I’ve ever had. Basically: if you don’t have a band and you’re not out doing this, you’re not having these problems. But problems are part of the payoff for having the band, being in it, doing it, is so big—so who cares about the problems?

Honestly, there are always gonna be problems. With work. With family. With automobiles. With dogs. With cats. With your house. With anything in the world.

You want the opportunity to have them.

Yesterday it was all a bit of a mess. Today it’s all fixed, everybody’s happy, and I’m going to have a great rehearsal. We’re totally set for Saturday. It’s a private party downtown at a really cool venue, and it’s gonna be a ball.

And although I had a min breakdown mid day, no one noticed! So bring on the problems.
