LinkedIn Is a Haunted House and the Robot Wants to Coach You

Yesterday I talked about how horrible LinkedIn is. A big part of the problem is it looks like people are waking up and saying that they want to post about X, and then it just spits it out some really base, horrible content. (We all know chat tone at this point, right?)

It’s just "content," and there is downward pressure throughout organizations for people to be thought leaders. So this is the kind of garbage that you get. But nothing like this sticks. People are reading it and liking it because they want to remain friends or some sh*t like this.

I use ChatGPT to transcribe this blog. It's voice notes that are transcribed. I have fought ruthlessly with Chat to get my voice correct and to not over correct to fix anything.

And this, as a friend pointed out yesterday, is the correct way to use it. It’s just taking care of some editing as there’s no way a tiny micro blog with maybe tens of reads a day is able to have an editor. I have spent months training it. You can see it getting cleaner throughout the entries chronologically.

It leads me to what I think the goal of these programs is. If you try to work out a problem on chat it will take you down some weird paths. It will give you bad advice, but it will make you feel a little bit better. And I think the first goal here--the goal is, obviously money, and as you know, advertising is going to start showing up.

This will not be random right, like Trojans to a 13-year-old dude reading Rolling Stone back in the day? It’s based on everything that you’re putting in--to get you ads that you’re more likely to engage with which obviously is as insidious as it comes.

Even ultimate-er, the goal I think is to be kind of social media 3.0, If 1.0 was everybody is connected and it’s you read stuff from your buddies. 2.0 is today's Instagram and Facebook, mostly advertising based on who you follow and how you use the app. As we all know, you can’t see your friends. Example: I thought a band I followed out of Vegas went out of business, but I found them last night. They’re still posting every day etc. Weird.

What these chatbots really want you to do is to just log in and talk to it, and it will talk back to you and make you feel good. Do all of your thinking for you. Don't worry about it!

I was trying to find a phone number for somebody yesterday, and it started coaching me on the call. Please to fuggs off! I know how to make the call. The machine knows nothing about it (but that’s another entry).

So, stay vigilant. These things are training you to make you want them to be your only social media, and there is a whole group of people in business today who already cannot operate without them.

It is comical. Actually, at the end of the day, it may be insurance for the old. So I’m changing my mind: young people, use the sh&t out of all of these.

Because I want to keep on working for as long as I can.
