I Am the Walrus en Mono
I was listening Rick Beato's interview Ken Scott talk about engineering I Am the Walrus. Rick played the mix and Scott asked, “What mix is that?” Turned out it was the stereo mix, not the mono mix.
Scott no like. The Beatles themselves made the mono mixes while the stereo mixes were done later, without them.
I checked Apple Music and the mono mixes are not streaming. The first few albums are, but not the Magical Mystery Tour. Weird.
As these classic albums age we are getting further and further away from what the artist intended. Fine with all these remixes — I love the Beatles remixes. I even love the Love soundtrack album. We saw that show a couple of times while it was running and was/ sounded amazing. I do not think any of that takes away from the originals. But I still want access to the original goods.
It is interesting to think about recorded music keeps changing on us. The stuff we know and love and assume is “forever” mutates as the formats change. They sound better, they sound worse — we are constantly being presented with somethingnew.
I do not know what that means for the future, other than thank God for YouTube. That is where things just seem to exist.
When I could not find the mono mix this morning, I finally found one uploaded to YouTube. I Am the Walrus in mono — I am here to tell you — sounds amazing.
