Guitars are Stupid

Music gear is making everybody miserable. And when I say that, I mean that the internet, because it's a huge sales funnel, trains you to buy it , and then said gear makes you feel miserable unless you get some more, all while the internet is now yelling at you for not using it right. And then it yells at you to get a course, and then it yells at you for not taking…Okay, maybe it doesn't yell at you for not taking the course. Now you take over.

You don't take the course and you're just miserable’er, so then you sell it all for a loss. And this is all the most not-in-the-present thing ever. The only thing you should ever take from music is that you're enjoying yourself in the moment, or maybe you're working hard to practice so you can enjoy yourself in the moment. Whatever. Point is, you should be enjoying yourself while on the journey.

For instance, I practice bass so that I can improvise and enjoy myself in the moment. But I also enjoy the practice. I didn’t always, but I’ve trained myself into enjoying it.

This is why you're miserable buying gear, but it attaches to your lust and you want and you buy and then you're even more miserable. Every single part of it keeps you from having or enjoying life with it then or now.

So all you’ve really done is bought this thing.

A friend of mine told me—who works at a guitar store, he said the secret is that guitars are stupid. It really stuck with me because it’s true.
