Grassroots vs. Spotify Numbers
On instagram, if I post a picture of my kids it gets a lot of likes, but if I post music it gets a lot of views and not a lot of likes. But everybody seems to see it because they talk to me about it.
Amongst my friends--everybody knows what I’m up to. Outside of that my reach is limited, but slowly — and I mean slowly — it's growing. With this last release I’ve talked about feeling good about the feedback I’m getting, and a lot of people listening to the whole record, which is pretty amazing. Somebody doing that with their time, that’s super cool.
It feels like I’m doing this right, slowly. A couple things a day now. Starting to do reels with the live set that is related to the record, and if not sounding completely like the record or being the same pieces, it sounds like me.
In the spirit of jazz — you know the old jazz records — they looked at recording sessions as kind of a gig--getting ready for it that way. So minus the technical ability of course, my records are kind of that. At least the instrumental ones have been largely improvised.
As I sit around and think, man what kind of musician do I want to be, I want to be the kind that I am. And these records are making sense of that.
I’m going to start videoing it too, to fill up the YouTube with some better content — or not so much content, but like reels — and put some of these live sets out and record shows as well.
It just seems kind of infinite to me, and I’m getting the feel right— and I hate to use this word — but the vibe is on point.
So I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and grow at this pace. It’s all real good and high touch, and the people who are listening are reaching out.
And like I was talking about a couple of days ago, I’m not really concerned with what happens if it gets bigger, like with a group of people I don’t know listening and reaching out.
I’ll just worry about that when it comes to it.
