Don’t Sell the Good Stuff: The Mopho Stays

Today I’d like to talk about my MoPho x4 keyboard, Dave Smith keyboard from the early 2010's. I love the way it sounds. I really like kind of it’s it’s like Rolandness. I know that it’s Sequential, people probably won’t love this but whatever.

There’s a much smaller sweet spot. You can really get things horribly wrong.

I actually had it sold on Reverb, then I took it down. I just got sad with losing it. I do have too much sh*t, but the MoPho is a cut too deep.

I’ve had the desktop. I’ve had the Tetra. I’ve had the—was actually trying to get the SE when I came across a really good deal on the x4, with the original gig bag (which didn't seem to be offered for very long).

So that being said, I’m spending X amount of time a day really trying to deeply get to know it. It’s exactly what I’m looking for. Four voices is enough with the right reverb and echo. So this is a long way of saying: if you buy too much sh*t, don’t panic and get rid of the good stuff.

The early to mid teens imprinted on me, and I kind of—when I got back into electronic stuff—the stuff I fell in love with like this, and the whole Roland Aria series, that first run, I still love it. And it was like even though I wasn’t a little kid, that was definitely a musical imprint period for me, and everything that I came across and bought then, I love today.

MoPho: I heard about it because it was the spiritual successor to the Pro-One, and obviously—not obviously—if you’ve read these posts, you may read about Vince Clarke, and my number one album is Upstairs at Eric’s for Yazoo, so I bought it purely on his recommendation.

Currently it’s I#1 with a bullet insofar as stage action w/ Daphne Falls. I’m putting presets together with my own patches and getting organized. The older I get--or kind of, the more mature musician in me, knows that organization is key to everything.

Love the MoPho. Not without its quirks. Don’t care. It’s a single voice—actually four voices—of the Prophet, and it sounds wonderful.
