Don’t Let “Release Brain” Steal Your Writing Session

In music--and life, you always want to try new things—almost always.

In this writing/ jamuary month, I’ve got something that works. Actually two things. And they’re really working very dependably.

But the last couple of days I started looking towards “release brain,” and how to get this stuff out. And what that turns into is trying to figure out a way to play it live, in a sense. Like, from a looping standpoint—maybe with a guitar, maybe with a drummer.

So I pulled out another piece of equipment, started working with it, got something cool, then tried to combine them this morning. And for the first day in this jamuary, I got not nothing-but worse. A horrible jam! I got off track. I got out of my groove.

So now I’ve got to figure out another time today to get a song out one to two ways, which I know how to do: playing my guitar, getting something I like into the OP-1, and going from there or getting on the MPC.

It’s a good lesson in not getting ahead of yourself, and truly waiting until this writing session is done to move on to the next thing.

I was able to do that a couple of days ago when I got the #Push out with a little mono synth. I was like, “oh wouldn’t this be cool…” blah blah blah. Then I shut it off and realized the state I was in—and that I needed to stay with it until the end of the month.

Lesson learned. I know I’ve talked about it, but I still did it.

But don’t we all.
