Community Is a Sales Funnel But Also Maybe ok

As I do about once a week, it seems I’ve been looking into new things, new ways to work on my music and to get it out there, and to make more music, and generally to keep writing all the time and composing.

So what this inevitably leads to is finding a couple good people on YouTube, and they always have what they like to call communities, which is a super fancy word for sales funnel.

I think they’re really good intentioned. Yes, they’re teachers, yes, they’re this and that, but it is kind of the modern kind of—so it’s their version of the shitty app subscription model.

I’m not saying they’re all useless. I’m not saying they’re not worth it, because they can be cheap and you can get what you need out of them, but there are those people that exist within these communities that seem to only exist in that community, and they kind of start to get their own pecking order, and kind of the group think is led by these very nerdy folks, and it turns into them kind of maybe swinging their meats around a little bit, and I’ve never really seen it not happen.

I’ve been a member of several of these. Say Brian Funk, a.k.a. Afro DJ Mac, has done a really good job of controlling this and controlling his deal, and I very early on became a member and stayed just because I like him. We’re pretty friendly and I enjoy the "community," and while there are a couple people who are very active, it actually reminds me of the old message boards back in the day.

Anyway, I think a lot of these people end up just doing these communities but not doing the work that the community is supposed to be about. I could be wrong, but I think on Monday I just think a lot of it feels pretty scammy. By Thursday I’m super optimistic and in a much better mood.

But hey, it’s Monday. Watch out!
