Back to Solo
First solo gig back after a year was tonight. About two-thirds covers—mostly ’90s college rock, some ’80s, and some originals.
The first four or five songs were rough. I tried to do way too much. I probably should’ve just been a guy with an acoustic guitar. I can bring the MPC in later.
If you haven’t done this in a year, practice with your PA. The sound of your voice coming through that thing is a whole new world. I forgot.
It was a three-hour gig. I’d say the first half of the first set was rough. Then I started getting the hang of it. I took a break after the first hour, and the last two hours were great.
My back was killing me. My fingers were dying. I’m used to two hours on stage playing bass, but not three hours of singing, chatting, picking songs, and carrying the whole show.
I repeated four or five songs at the end of the night—the ones I screwed up in the first set.
This afternoon I was wondering why I ever decided to do this again.
Tonight, post-show, I’m really glad I did. I’m going to build on this playlist, because I think this is something I’m going to do a lot more.
