7 Hour DJ Test
All in all, both gigs were great this weekend.
I DJ'ed at a brewery yesterday out pretty far west of Austin, north of Dripping Springs. Super cool place, great vibes, the people that were there were wonderful. The staff was great, all that good stuff. Really cool farm-to-table food truck. The brewery is 12 Fox Brewing, and I brought the super mobile setup that I was trying out this weekend.
They had Wi-Fi. I did learn it's better if you're streaming to just stream off your phone. Less breaks. Country Wi-Fi, no matter if they have the best, greatest package ever, can be intermittent. I was down for a minute, which younger me would've died over and would've still been thinking about today. Older me was like, I was prepared, and I fixed it.
So, really had a great time with the '90s set. Did not realize how nostalgic people are for the '90s, and those were my college years. So all I was doing was sitting around listening to music. I'm gonna sharpen that setup. I'm gonna dig deeper. I think having seven hours of '90s music that's perfectly tuned is such a benefit.
I do own a lot of that music, so I've got to figure that out between owned and streaming. Again, when I'm streaming, I've got a backup kind of ready to go. Maybe use a third or fourth deck, always loaded.
Anyway, djay Pro has been excellent. I found myself almost shopping this morning for a full-size deck, but an iPad and the MixTour Pro are all you need.
I was a little hesitant to go out with the Zoom L6 mixer, which I think is now $250. Nothing to fear. My Anker phone battery went down to only about 70% after three hours. Four AA batteries in the L6 just in case. All of that was charging my iPad too.
I will say that having those power cords not hanging down from my rig is a very clean, good feel. I just really like this rig.
Weather was nice. Didn't overheat. I had my iPad and the MixTour Pro elevated so wind could get under them. The flow from the fan was going over and under the units, which was great.
It's also hitting me, and I learned about this from Frank Wiedemann when I did my retreat with he and Sebastian Mullaert in Sweeden. It's one of the greatest tips I've ever gotten. I had the gear propped up with practice hockey pucks. If you're playing out, go out and buy a couple of these things.
All in all, I'm super happy with the new rig. I'm gonna really try to integrate my iPad Mini with the Denon Prime Go+ just again as a backup and have that thing in the car at all times.
This is a super trustworthy rig. I spent over seven hours on it in the heat. The iPad Mini is a little small, but it's so portable and easy to operate.
If I was buying an iPad, I don't know if I'd buy one of those or I'd buy the 11-inch Air or whatever the bigger one is, but I don't think you need the M chip. Whatever chip works just fine.
And the syncing, and whatever algorithm is timing these '70s and '90s tracks, is almost perfect. Some of them with tempo changes, you need to take sync off when you're mixing into another song, but all in all, really great.
The one thing I am gonna do is try to figure out some of these transition tricks.
But big fan of djay Pro after this weekend and a big fan of the MixTour Pro. Just great. No complaints. People were happy. I know what to do next time.
Happy Monday.
